The Road Less Travelled: How I Stumble Upon Inspiration and Where My Ideas Originate
This post explores how a chance encounter with aspiring nurses—and their newly mastered techniques—not only challenged me, but shifted my attitude in unexpected ways. Before I dive into that story, let me share a bit about what inspired this week’s blog post.
I have always loved words. The meaning, origin, usage, and even the sound of words have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. I never reach for complicated language just to sound impressive; if a simpler word suits the context—like “use” instead of “utilize”—I’ll choose it. I don’t wield vocabulary as a way to puff out my chest or indulge in hubris. Sometimes, though, a word I select carries a deeper shade of meaning, perfectly underscoring my point or expressing the emotion I’m feeling in that moment. When that happens, I trust my instincts and let the word spill out naturally—real, genuine, and authentic.
I’ve always believed that my true measure as a “renaissance man” lies in my ability to see beyond my circumstances and step around any bad attitudes, preconceived notions, or biases I might carry. By doing so, I remain open to every miracle willing to manifest—each one an opportunity to learn, grow, and hopefully, pay forward for others. That’s my definition of true resilience, drawn from deep within my spirit.

Authentic and Heartfelt: Words and Their Meanings
“Stigma” is something I’ve battled on many fronts—from early childhood right up to the present. The word first entered my vocabulary when I heard it used in a context that mirrored the complex stereotypes I saw everywhere around me. I felt empathy for those impacted by stigma, because—although my circumstances were different—I too carried the weight of confirmation bias, contempt prior to investigation, and deliberate indifference.
Most of these wounds were rooted in ignorance and the inability of others to look beyond assumptions, to embrace objectivity. Above all, it hurt; I still bear the scars. They serve as reminders—never to judge without first examining fully and with an open mind. Perhaps, even better: simply don’t judge at all. After all, it’s not my circus, and not my clowns…
“Serendipity” is a word I fell in love with the very first time I heard it. Once I discovered its meaning, I realized I’d found a lifelong companion. Serendipity rolls off my tongue so easily—it’s playful, fun to say, and, I suppose, my “happy word.” If there is such a thing. Its meaning resonates with me: I can truly say an experience was “serendipitous.” I wasn’t searching for it; it appeared out of nowhere, and it was beautiful.
I smile—some might wonder how anyone can find beauty in a relationship with a word, or with words themselves. But I do. Always have, always will. For me, it simply is, and I’m perfectly okay with that. It actually used to be much “worse.” The military taught me to be more concise, to trim down my language. Hard to imagine me being even more “wordy,” right?
Finally, let’s talk about “lagniappe.” I first encountered this word in New Orleans during my time in the Navy, and from the start, I was captivated by the city’s unique spirit. Being stationed in Pensacola, Florida, meant the “Big Easy” was just a short drive away—so I visited as often as I could, soaking in every aspect of its history, architecture, culture, and especially its cuisine. I forged strong friendships there and soon began referring to New Orleans as the “Land of the Misfit Toys”—a place where everyone belonged, no one was an outcast, and all were welcomed as neighbors, family, or long-lost friends. For me, it felt like home.
Over time, I noticed that longtime residents—native “New Orleanians”—spoke with a distinctive accent, colored by local patois, Cajun, and Creole words that grew out of the city’s rich heritage. One word that caught my ear early on was “lagniappe”: a little something extra, a bonus added to a purchase or experience.
You’ll most often hear “lagniappe” around food. Maybe a restaurant surprises you with a free dessert, or a grocer slips a piece of candy to a child at checkout. But its spirit reaches far beyond food—sometimes it’s a random extra treat or surprise, like two snacks dropping from a vending machine when you only paid for one. It’s about the unexpected, thoughtful touch. That, to me, is the spirit of lagniappe: the unexpected gift that makes ordinary moments extraordinary
With the title in place and each word woven into its proper context, I feel ready to move forward. My hope is that you find enjoyment and maybe a bit of fulfillment in reading this—just as I did while writing. My heart smiles as I allow my soul to pour forth onto these pages and share them with you.

Poetry Spotlight: Unexpected Surprises
Serendipity
by John RushtonThis is one time I hope to keep it simple—no confusion,
no puzzle to solve for all to see.
I embarked on this journey chained to fear and uncertainty,
my vision narrow;
success only assured if my only concern was me,
focused with laser-like precision,
convinced it was the only way it could be.
Then, a sudden change—
abrupt, without warning,
like a thief in the night
stealing the peace that barely clothed me
and leaving me cold in the morning.
Looking for anything, my naked anxiety
disturbing—fear of the unknown building
in waves, nothing short of alarming.
Upon arrival in these new surroundings,
mixed feelings: at first, bearable.
But soon, the honeymoon was over—
reality made it contemptible.
Fake smiles abound, faint empathy everywhere—
all of it laughable.
Patience worn thin, razor-sharp epithets
from my mouth, truly detestable.
Just as I thought I’d had enough,
hoping for an escape, believing things were much too rough,
a gentle knock intrudes on my rare and cherished silence.
I sigh in anticipation of what unwanted visitor
might provoke me to uncommon violence.
I signal for the interloper to enter—
a surprisingly timid stranger reporting front and center.
I look up—then my heart melts,
meeting a picture of fear standing, staring back at me.
The tides quickly turn, sensing a lack of confidence
hoping for an escape, believing things were much too rough,
a gentle knock intrudes on my rare and cherished silence.
I sigh in anticipation of what unwanted visitor
might provoke me to uncommon violence.
I signal for the interloper to enter—
a surprisingly timid stranger reporting front and center.
I look up—then my heart melts,
meeting a picture of fear standing, staring back at me.
The tides quickly turn, sensing a lack of confidence
paired with a measure of certainty.
Is this a random or chance encounter with destiny?
These are students, and I’m no longer allowed
to think only of myself.
Reflecting, I realize: until now,
I always made it a point to encourage—
unknowingly, I had fallen away
from my passion and purpose.
From this point, my attitude changed.
Now I welcome these students into my life—
into every facet it contains.
Like a sponge, they soak up every detail
with genuine interest, not a speck of judgment or blame.
I witness the spark of curiosity

Main Narrative and Personal Reflection:
Renewing My Sense of Purpose Through an Unexpected Paradigm Shift
Shame on Me for Displaying Such a Bad Attitude!
For the past several weeks, I’ve had the unexpected privilege of observing countless student nurses as they complete their clinical rotations at the VA Hospital. Each Thursday and Friday, a fresh group arrives—bright-eyed, a little nervous, guided by remarkable instructors. What started as a detour on my own recovery journey has evolved into one of my greatest passions—a new wellspring of inspiration and motivation.
On Thursdays, Professor “Bobby” Heintzelman leads the charge. At first glance, she’s all business: direct, tough, and sharp as steel. Her military background in an environment plagued by toxicity and misogyny forged her resilience. Beneath her hard-edged exterior, though, lies a soft heart—a teddy bear in combat boots. Her teaching style mirrors this paradox: she sets high standards, demands accountability, and has no patience for nonsense. But her bedside manner—the gentle checks, quiet encouragement—is proof that true compassion flourishes even in the harshest climates.
Her presence is a rare union—iron will wrapped around a tender heart. She shows that true strength is found in soft touches and uncompromising empathy. She is exactly where she’s meant to be, doing exactly what she was called to do. I have not a single doubt.
Fridays bring Professor Rhine: the very embodiment of comfort and care. She moves through the ward with a soothing voice and a radiant smile, a presence that restores and uplifts. Her words calm stormy hearts; her approach turns anxiety to trust. She’s the kind of person you’d bring your deepest worries to—the portrait of a healing mother or grandmother, quietly working miracles with empathy.
Where Professor Heintzelman is steel softened by kindness, Professor Rhine is gentle warmth that melts uncertainty and restores hope. She, too, is anchored firmly where she belongs.
I love being a part of their teaching experience. I’m not just a chart or a case—I’m an active partner in their learning. I feel responsible for making my side of the environment as open and inviting as possible, granting every hardworking student the freedom to excel. From day one, I share photos tracking my wound progression, surgery stats, and rehab milestones. I answer questions honestly and guide them through the intricacies of recovery. My mission is to inspire their confidence and strengthen their resolve; when doubts arise, I demonstrate resilience in real time. When they need encouragement, I offer it freely. I want these future nurses to walk away with skills and, most importantly, the belief that they can truly make a difference.
What began as an unexpected twist in my hospital stay has blossomed into something far more meaningful. I’ve found an entirely new sense of drive and determination—every student offers a fresh reason to press forward, to greet each day with purpose. Witnessing their transformation—from hesitation to competence, textbook learning to compassionate practice—has shown me the powerful ripple effect that can come from sharing my story.
Concluding Thoughts:
What I learned is simple: sometimes, the gifts of growth and meaning arrive when and where you least expect them. An experience colored by the shadows of stigma can turn into a moment of unexpected serendipity. Then comes the real treasure—a lagniappe worth more than anything you could have bargained for. By staying open, even when it hurts, I’ve found connection, purpose, and healing. Sharing a piece of myself with these future, unsung superheroes of healthcare feels, in a small way, like helping shape their journey—and the future of healthcare I want to see.
I remind myself—and them—that recovery is never just a solo endeavor. It’s a partnership. By inviting these students and instructors into my journey, I hope I help shape the future of healthcare. And in turn, they shape me—with every question answered, every smile shared, every milestone celebrated, my own hope multiplies.
My deepest passion has always been walking alongside others as they navigate the uncertain paths leading toward the places their hearts are guiding them, as I’ve done. I knew, in broad strokes, where I wanted to go; the terrain was always a mystery. Whether it was pursuing my dream to help others through my lived experience as a peer specialist, learning how to become certified, and finding my first role in the field—each step revealed new purpose. Advancing to full-time peer specialist and health navigator, helping others find their voice; earning further certifications; joining an Assertive Community Treatment team and stepping into many roles; helping to write the state peer support exam, and launching a crisis warm line during the pandemic—each opportunity fueled my passion to help through experience. My current recovery gives me new perspective and fresh appreciation to do it all again.
If something I say steadies even one student’s hand, eases someone’s fear, or inspires a choice of care over indifference, then my time here is valuable beyond measure. I never take these moments for granted. I seek out each new lesson with renewed energy, ready to apply it to my life. Even more importantly, these opportunities have reshaped my own journey. For that, I am—and will always remain—truly humbled and deeply grateful.
